Natural by design

Mosa X LumiPod

This is a collaboration between two European brands. The first is Mosa, a Dutch company which makes ceramic tiles that respect the environment and health. The second company, Lumicene established in France, has created a veritable cocoon measuring 26 square meter that is installed right in the heart of nature. The company didn’t have to make any sacrifices when it came to the origin and quality of the materials in order to meet the criteria for luxury hotel accommodation. So it was the merits and quality of Mosa tiles that spurred Lumicene to use them to cover LumiPod- bathrooms.

The choice of Cradle to Cradle

'LumiPod is a cocoon that’s placed right in the middle of nature. It was designed to blend seamlessly into the landscape. Naturally, we paid particular attention to the materials used, and the capacity to recycle these materials one day. So we were won over by the Cradle to Cradle approach developed by Mosa', says Clément Salvaire, Managing Director of Lumicene.

What is Cradle to Cradle? In harmony with nature, Cradle to Cradle certification means zero waste, zero shortages and zero limitations. It is a design concept based on unlimited reutilisation of raw materials, the use of renewable energies, and the stimulation of diversity.

All products designed by Mosa meet the five assessment criteria for Cradle to Cradle certification:

  • Purity of raw materials: the company takes care to ensure that the raw materials do not harm the environment or health. So the tiles are mainly made of sand and clay.
  • Recycling: The use of pure raw materials means that the products can be fully reutilised
  • Energy: One third of the energy needed to make Mosa products now comes from green energy sources
  • Use of water: Water is a scarce and valuable resource, this is why the company aims to ensure that all of the water used in the manufacturing process is reused or evaporated
  • Working conditions: Mosa deliberately chooses to continue manufacturing in western Europe, a region rich in potential and raw materials: nearly 90% of our raw materials come from quarries in the region.

From nature to luxury hotel accommodation

Although the LumiPod is placed in natural settings, amid mountains or forests, the company wanted it to have all of the features of luxury hotel accommodation, which explains why it took so much care in choosing the raw materials used. For the bathroom, Lumicene chose mosaic tiles, as these small tiles are easier to work with on curved walls. To match the 'interior of the bedrooms, which feature natural shades with simple and raw materials, Lumicene chose to work with tiling product Core Collection Terra 216 mosaics square (30 by 30 centimeter) on the walls and Core Collection Terra 216 relief R11/C (60 by 60 centimeter) on the floor. Mosaic tiles in different shades of grey create a warm ambience in the bathroom.

Strong materials

All Mosa products are manufactured in accordance with European standard EN 14411 and often exceed the requirements of these standards for specific items by a long way. The surface of the tiles is extremely robust and highly resistant to chemicals and abrasion. This means that the tiles retain their appearance for years , with no discoloration, or changes in their colour. According to the project architect, this is a guarantee of quality, because it ensures that the products won’t degrade over the years and will retain their premium appearance.

So what’s next?

This is just the beginning for this harmonious collaboration between the two companies: 'We’ve received several thousand requests from private individuals and hoteliers since LumiPod was launched just over a year ago. Since then, the first LumiPods have been installed in France. Some initial hotel projects are under development in France and the rest of Europe. And we plan to start manufacturing LumiPods in Australia and New Zealand in the next few months!' says Clément Salvaire.
