Mosa, an evolution through time
Mosa was founded in Maastricht by Louis Regout in 1883. Over the years, the company has adapted constantly to the world around it. However, the pursuit of contemporary design, sustainability and craftmanship has never changed.

1883
Hubert Gérard Louis Regout, the fifth son of Petrus Regout, establishes the first Dutch porcelain factory together with his son Louis on the Meerssenerweg. They name the company ‘Firma Louis Regout en Zoon’ , which produces blue Chinese imitation porcelain.

1888
Firma Louis Regout en Zoon starts manufacturing ceramic wall tiles and the company is renamed Mosa Porselein & Muurtegelfabriek.
1890
Mosa starts using a 70-horsepower steam engine.

1905
Mosa employs a total of 480 people.



1925
The First World War posed challenges for Mosa in terms of procurement due to a shortage of raw materials and fuel. Nevertheless, Mosa managed to sustain its production and successfully ventured into the electrotechnical porcelain market, which included items like insulators. Following the war, Mosa experienced further growth and introduced English tea sets to its product lineup.

1940
World War Two breaks out, leading to another shortage of raw materials. Many of Mosa's employees are compelled to work in Germany.

1947
Mosa Porselein hires the ceramic designer Edmond Bellefroid and starts designing and producing designer sets. Industrial designers Jef Schijns and Pieter Stockmans later join Mosa and continue working there for an extended period.

1957
Transfer of floor tile production from Meerssenerweg to the new floor tile factory in Limmel.
1958
Mosa celebrates its 75-year anniversary.


1964
Kho Liang le and Mosa’s designers develop a range of relief tiles. Kho Liang le uses the tile collection, based on circles and squares, to design the interior of Schiphol airport.

1966
Mosa designs a set of porcelain as a wedding gift for the Dutch royal family.


1972
L.H.W. Regout, the last member of the Regout family, leaves the company. Mosa becomes part of the Thyssen Bornemisza Group banking and trading company.

1975
Thyssen Bornemisza sells Mosa to DSM (Dutch State Mines).
1977
Mosa introduces the successful Chopin tile series, which incorporates the industrial designer Jef Schijns’ ‘strooidecor’ design.


1983
Mosa celebrates its 100-year anniversary and is awarded the ‘Koninklijke’ (royal) designation, making it ‘Koninklijke Mosa’.
1984
DSM divests its building division and sells Mosa to Redland Holding, a British company.

1990
Redland announces its intent to sell Mosa.
1991
Mosa is incorporated into the France Alfa (Céramiques de France) holding, of which the principal seat is in Paris.
1996
Mosa meets the ISO 9001 standard, the international standard for quality management systems.
1998
Mosa B.V. gains independent.

2000
Mosa becomes a designer brand.
2005
Mosa is bought out by the Dutch investment company Egeria.

2006
The floor tile factory is expanded to incorporate the XXL factory to produce large-sized tiles.
2007
Mosa implements its sustainability strategy and is awarded the ISO 14001 certification, the international standard for environmental management systems.

2008
Mosa celebrates its 125-year anniversary.
2009
Mosa earns its first Cradle to Cradle certifications for tiles.

2010
Mosa Facades and Mosa Systems are established.
2011
Mosa becomes a Cradle to Cradle Chartered Company. The company opens the first MACC (Mosa Architectural Ceramics Center) in Amsterdam. The MACC is currently known as the Mosa Design Studio Amsterdam.

2012
Mosa receives a Cradle to Cradle certificate for its façade system.
2013
Introduction first version Mosa Pattern Generator: a user-friendly online design tool that can be used to create unique patterns with all Mosa tiles.

2013
Mosa opens the new development of the warehouse in Beek. Mosa opens the MACC in London, known as the Mosa Design Studio London.
2014
Mosa receives the Cradle to Cradle Innovator of the Year Award. Mosa opens the MACC in Maastricht, which is currently known as the Mosa Design Studio Maastricht.

2016
Mosa opens its Mosa USA head office in New York.
2017
Mosa invests in a new fast-firing kiln.
2020
Mosa introduces Motto by Mosa: a new tile collection for consumers in the Netherlands.


2022
Mosa achieves Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold milestone.
2023
Mosa’s 140-year anniversary.
